The pool courtyard of the Alcazaba in Malaga, Spain

The pool courtyard of the Alcazaba in Malaga, also known as the Arrayán courtyard, is one of the central spaces of the Nasrid palace within the monumental complex. This courtyard is characterised by a large elongated pool located in the centre, whose water surface functions as a decorative element and mirror for the surrounding architecture, similar to the famous Patio de los Arrayanes in the Alhambra in Granada. At the ends of the pool are two pavilions, currently used as museums, while the courtyard is bordered on the sides by myrtle hedges that accentuate the symmetry and serenity of the space.

The water not only served an aesthetic function, but also provided coolness and a relaxing atmosphere, inviting the tranquillity and meditation so characteristic of Hispano-Muslim architecture. The porticoes with semicircular arches precede the administrative rooms, and part of the original flooring is still preserved. This courtyard evokes the palatial life of the Nasrid period and represents one of the most refined examples of the interaction between vegetation, hydraulic elements and architectural spaces in the Alcazaba, making it an essential reference point for understanding the Andalusian legacy in Malaga.
