Passion fruit, a unique exotic flavour

maracujas

Passion fruit is the fruit of the Passiflora genus, particularly the Passiflora edulis species, also known as grenadilla. This tropical berry, which is egg-shaped and the size of an egg, has a thick, rough skin that can be purple or yellow depending on the variety. Inside, the orange-coloured, jelly-like pulp surrounds small, crunchy black seeds. This fruit is distinguished by its unique exotic flavour, combining sweet and tangy notes, making it a popular ingredient in cooking, both in desserts and savoury dishes.

Native to the Amazon, passion fruit is now grown in many tropical and subtropical countries around the world. Eaten plain with a teaspoon, it adds a touch of exoticism to many recipes such as mousses, sorbets and fruit salads. In addition to being rich in vitamins (A, B2, B3, C) and minerals (potassium, copper), it is known for its high fibre and antioxidant content, particularly polyphenols such as gallic acid, which contribute to its health benefits.

Papaya (Carica Papaya) in Senegal

Carica Papaya

The papaya is a tropical fruit tree native to Central and South America, belonging to the Caricaceae family. Generally modest in size (between 3 and 10 m tall), it has a straight, unbranched trunk crowned with large, deeply-cut, palmate leaves arranged in a spiral at the top. Its shallow root system requires well-drained soil, and the papaya is often grown in warm, humid regions, as it is sensitive to cold and frost.

The fruit of the papaya is the papaya, a large oblong or spherical berry that can measure from 10 to 50cm in length. Its skin, which starts out green, turns orange-yellow when ripe. Its juicy, tender, orange flesh is surrounded by numerous round, shiny black seeds clustered in the centre. Mild and sweet, the taste of papaya is reminiscent of melon and peach. Rich in vitamins (particularly vitamin C), fibre and digestive enzymes (such as papain), papayas are enjoyed as fresh fruit, in salads or juices, and are also used in savoury dishes in many tropical cuisines.

The dahlia "Offshore dream", known for its enchanting color gradients and romantic presence in the garden

dahlia

The dahlia 'Offshore Dream' is a striking decorative variety known for its enchanting color gradients and romantic presence in the garden. Its blooms begin as a soft pink, with the petals deepening in color as the flower matures before elegantly fading back to a blush or almost white at the tips. The fully double blooms are notable for their size, typically measuring between 11–15cm across, creating a lush effect that stands out in border plantings or floral arrangements. The plant itself reaches a height of around 85–100cm, producing an abundance of these large flowers steadily from July until the first frost.

Adaptable and ideal for cut flowers, 'Offshore Dream' fits seamlessly into both pastel-themed and more vibrant color schemes, pairing beautifully with other pinks, whites, and gentle shades. Its blooms have a delicate, lily-like decorative form, making them favorites for both garden displays and bouquets. The plant flourishes best in sunny to partially shaded positions and prefers fertile, well-drained soil, requiring standard dahlia care such as frost protection in winter. With its long flowering period and dreamy color progression, 'Offshore Dream' offers sustained visual interest through the summer and autumn months.
