he Feria de Antequera, also known as the Feria Real de Agosto, is one of the oldest and most traditional fairs in Andalusia, held every year in August, usually around the second half of the month. It is held in the historic town of Antequera, in the heart of Andalusia, in the province of Málaga. It combines tradition, Andalusian culture, popular festivities and a friendly atmosphere.
Main features of the Feria de Antequera :
Two atmospheres: day and night
- The Feria de Día takes place in the streets of the historic centre. The squares and alleyways are filled with stalls (known as ‘casetas’), flamenco music, Sevillanas dances, tapas, local wine and cheerful crowds, often dressed in traditional Andalusian costumes.
- The Feria de Noche is held in the ‘Recinto Ferial’, a large esplanade on the outskirts of the town, decorated with fairy lights, merry-go-rounds, festive casetas and concert stages. Here you can dance, eat and party the night away.
Equestrian elegance
The presence of Andalusian horses and decorated horse-drawn carriages is an essential part of the féria. There are often equestrian parades, competitions and dressage demonstrations. This is also an opportunity for riders to parade around in traditional costume.
Music, dance and folklore
Flamenco, sevillanas, local groups and free concerts set the tone. The atmosphere is festive, colourful and rhythmic, from morning till night.
A religious and historical touch
The Feria de Antequera has historical roots linked to the Catholic tradition. The Romería de la Virgen de los Remedios, patron saint of the town, takes place before or during the Feria, with a pilgrimage in traditional dress to the Virgin's hermitage.
Fireworks and official opening
The féria often begins with a ‘pregón’ (opening speech) in the Plaza de Toros, followed by a fireworks show , which kicks off a week of festivities.
In a nutshell:
The Feria de Antequera is a typical Andalusian fiesta, rich in colour, tradition, music, horses and gastronomy. It's a great opportunity to discover the hospitality of the people of Antequera, their cultural pride, and to enjoy an authentic experience in the heart of Andalusia.
