Demijohn restorer, Comares, Málaga, 2020

Restaurador de damajuanas

This photo was taken with a mobile phone in very bad lighting conditions. Despite this, I wanted to publish it because it shows a trade that, like many others, is being lost: that of the demijohn restorer. This is a craftsman specialising in the recovery and repair of these large glass vessels, historically used to store liquids such as wine or oil. His work involves carefully cleaning the demijohns, removing dirt, deposits or stains that have accumulated over time and repairing any cracks or damage to the glass using manual techniques and specialised materials. In addition, this job requires knowledge of the safe handling of antique glass and, sometimes, of the wicker braiding or outer protection that these pieces often have. Thanks to their dedication, the demijohns recover their original functionality and beauty, maintaining both their historical and decorative value for new uses today.
